The term Suseok, or Scholar´s Stones, is used for rocks that resemble natural landscapes, traditionally believed to embody the essence of nature. Collected and placed on custom made wooden pedestals, these rocks supposedly bind us to the landscape.

Our Contemporary Scholar´s Stones, in contrast, are collected from the cultural landscape. Rather than wandering in forests we roam the endless redevelopment sites all over Seoul. We collect chunks of cement, tiles, bricks and other debris that still a moment ago formed the buildings we live in and the cityscape we inhabit.

Instead of serving as physical tokens of our spiritual connection to the landscape, in our contemporary version they become aesthetic totems of our total devotion to the economic landscape.

한국의 가옥 내부에 도자기와 같이 진열된 수석들에서 착안한 작품으로, 재개발 사업을 위해 철거된 가옥의 폐허에서 발견한 물체들로 이루어진다. 시멘트, 벽돌, 타일, 철근 등의 파편 덩어리로 이루어진 이 작품은 빈번하게 재개발 지역에서 나타나는 ‘현대 도시 수석’이라 할 수 있겠다. '컨템포러리 수석'을 통해, 개발 가치가 최우선인 건물과 인간과의 혼연일체에 도달하여 주거 환경의 깊은 이치를 갖가지로 이해하려는 경제적 사상 감정을 음미한다. 철거지역에서 찾은 덩어리들은 작가가 임의적으로 가공하지 않고, 떨어진 파편이 드러내는 개발미의 경치가 그대로 축소되어 있으며, 환상적인 추상미를 발산하며 정서적인 감흥을 불러일으킨다.
